But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope

You thought I was done with the protesting?

There are strong rumors about the possibility of another walkout tomorrow. I was supposed to be in Burbank at a meeting to choose new textbooks for social studies, but the rumor is strong enough that they cancelled the meeting. In any case, keep your eyes open and realize that not all LAUSD students are uninformed, irresponsible truants.

let me ask you this...Don't you have to read the social studies text before you choose it. Or do you just go by pretty covers. Just asking. Orrrrrrr. Do you get to sit through unbearable power point presentations by the publishers and get sweet fringe benefits...like the publisher takes you to strip clubs and what not. I envy the influence you wield.

I really don't have to read the whole book to get the idea of how it is written. We look for a book at grade level, with good resources, that completely covers state standards, is accessible to learners at all levels (smart, average, dumb) as well as English abilities, and that the pictures are representative of all American cultures. And, yes, we get to sit through presentations by the publishers. Fortunately, there is no nudity involved as the reps are usually middle-aged and rarely hot. The last time I was involved the rep was a middle-aged flaming gay guy. The only perks I get are samples of the books. There is a beast of a box, about the size of a large cooler, waiting for me in the dept chair's room right now. Well, he says there are now 4-5 of them.
